Introduction

Here are two quotes about photography from two renowned photographers:

"To me, photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place… I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.”

Elliot Erwitt

“There is a creative fraction of a second when you are taking a picture. Your eye must see a composition or an expression that life itself offers you, and you must know with intuition when to click the camera. That is the moment the photographer is creative. Oop! The Moment! Once you miss it, it is gone forever.”

Henri Cartier-Bresson

Both these quotes are relevant to the branch of our art known as Street Photography.

For us Street Photography is simply being out there with the camera, any camera and any lens, any time, night or day and shooting what you see. Seeing through the lens what many people miss with their eyes. Making the ordinary look extraordinary. People, architecture, street furniture...whatever catches your eye.

To enjoy and attain a degree of competence in Street Photography we believe it takes a balance of 4 elements:

  • An eye for a shot
  • A good working knowledge of your camera
  • A good sense of discretion & care - when to shoot and when not to shoot
  • Bags of confidence

Hopefully you have achieved (1) and (2) already or will be working towards achieving them naturally the more you use your camera. Our Photowalk is about (3) and (4).

During the day we will run four exercises which will, we hope, stretch your confidence and your 'feel' for the right shot - the shot that works. Our working area will the length and breadth of Broadway Market - here you'll find people shopping, browsing, busking, chatting, shops, graffiti, market stalls - in fact all manner of London life.

At the end of the 4 exercises we'll all take ourselves off to a cafe/bar and we can swap ideas, inspiration and techniques and hopefully celebrate a good day's photography.

The price to take part in one of our photowalks is just £15 please use the contact form on this or simply email info@pnjphotography.com to book a place.
